        You do have to use another solution, but Site Server is a bit of a
pain to work with as you may already know. Check out http://www.flicks.com
for a product called Authentix. It's far easier to use then Site Server, and
I've actually converted a couple of my sites from using Site Server to
Authentix. At least Authentix let's you choose how to store the date, in an
internal db, any ODBC compliant database, or through the NT SAM. It's also
way cheaper then Site Server which is a plus. Flicks should also have a
trialware product that works identical to the purchased one so you can put
it through it's paces. FYI, the online docs are way better then the ones
that usually ship with Authentix so if you run into trouble, check the
online ones. The sample code that comes with the trial also needs help, but
there are clearer samples in the online docs.

Hey Scott,

So far I have
simply scratched the surface with what your products can do. I am looking
forward to "playing" with all the features and walking through the tutorial
on creating the Authenticate COM object with VB6. Yet another wonderful (
and fun) feature!

My predecessor was adding all the users to the NT user system. I am sure you
have heard but when you try to perform maintenance after adding a large
amount of user you start to run into a lag. A serious LAG! Forget trying to
do any type of custom reports about activity, visits, browser type etc. Good
luck exporting a password report! 


Using my own database I can query my
customer table in all sorts of useful ways and get
completely away from the NT user system. Add ASP and I can even provide my
customer base reporting functions customized to their particular needs.

Again...I can't say enough good stuff about the programs. You are making me
look fantastic! ;-)  I am going to continue to development my login system
using WebQuota as the backbone. I am certain that the Big Bossman will give
the OK for me to purchase the program for out servers after he sees what "I"
can do!!!  ;-)

If you guys ever get to NC drop me a line. I'll buy you lunch!!

I solved this problem for myself by using a commercial authentication module
called Authentix (www.flicks.com). It avoids having to use NT user accounts
and NTFS access rights to log people in (eg when you have 10,000
user/password combinations - manage that with NT user accounts!) as you can
authenticate users against any ODBC database table or the authentix
program's build in database. 
It's easy as pie to use

 and can protect
directories or indivdual files as you choose. It installs as an ISAPI filter
so it's fast. give it a try.

It's an absolute dream come true.  

Great security features, database
acccount protection where you can ban IP addresses for trying to run
WWWHack against your servers, password abuse filters where you can
suspend accounts for simultaneous use and a host of other features.  


EZ to install and configure and the developer who wrote it answers the
phone and answers your questions.  He's a hoot to talk to ;)


So I recommend it highly.

I would like to put a personal endorsement in for AuthentiX.  I asked on
the list last week about securing web pages. I had seen AuthentiX, but
it wouldn't work for me since it was case sensitive on the password (all
of my passwords are stored in a database in uppercase.) I also didn't
like that it secured the directory and not the individual files. After
no response from the list I called Kevin and explained the situation I
had. He told me how I could protect individual files (it's quiet easy),
and looked at the problem I was having with the passwords. He then
recompiled the code with a switch in the registry to turn off case
sensitivity in the passwords. An hour later I had the new version and it
works like a charm.

I have a very large userbase (about 35,000) all in the 
Authentix db.  I have my users loggin on to a page and 
assigning themselves a password, which passess via a 
form to Authentix OCX control which verifies  they are 
in the db and then changes their password to the one they 
entered in the form.

Then if the verification is successful the asp email a 
number of users notifying them that they a new user 
has verified (using your aspmailctrl).
Everything is working great.

I downloaded the AuthentiX evaluation copy and was able 
to install the software and begin protecting my web 
pages in less than 30 minutes.  The install is quick and 
the configuration is practically zero.  It actually 
took more time to move my directories to a test area 
than it took to tell AuthentiX how to protect them.

The AuthentiX product did in 30 minutes what 2 weeks 
of struggling couldn't even touch.

Kevin, thanks to you and Flicks Software for providing an 
essential tool for managing my intranet server.  Authentix is the the 
best solution I have found that allows me to easily 
restrict access to  my IIS 3.0 web site without the need to add users 
to the NT system.  With the available access to user parameters 
through active server pages, it provides a capability required 
for our effort, allowing users to maintain their passwords 
for restricted access.  Thanks again for a great product 
at a reasonable price, and for all of your help.

This is getting sickening, upgraded to NT 4.0/IIS 2.0
and everything just keeps working!!!

Right now I have AuthentiX running under NT 3.51 IIS 1.0
and another under NT 4.0 IIS 2.0, and both are operating
flawlessly!!!  The sites are duplicates of each other, but
on different servers.
